Over the years I have coached and assisted hundreds of people in their quest to feel better, look better or perform better.  Throughout the course of this time I have come to realize that all of the small pieces really do make up the whole.  What I mean by this is that in the pursuit of goals each and every little thing you do does make a difference.  I’ve found that there is not one specific thing that can be attributed as “the secret” for success.  In particular when it comes to loosing body fat most people want it to disappear overnight.  When in reality it took weeks, months and sometimes even years to put it on.  In this month’s edition let’s take a look at some of the seemingly little differences between success and failure in fat loss.

On average if your goal is to lose body fat and be healthier you should be at the minimum doing the following:

  1. Eat breakfast each and every day
  2. Eat lots of foods that are high in macronutrient value and low in calories (veggies are the best example of this)
  3. Consume foods provided by Mother Nature which are not processed, altered, enhanced or micro waved
  4. Eat 5 or more times a day (small meals spaced evenly over the course of the day)
  5. Participate in a sound and proven weight bearing exercise program 3 days per week
  6. Drink a minimum of half your body weight in oz’s of water every day
  7. Average 7-8 hours of quality sleep per night
  8. Avoid drinking Alcohol

Yet nearly all of the people who are unhealthy and in need of fat loss have these things in common:

  1. They do not eat breakfast
  2. They eat one or no servings of vegetables per day
  3. A high percentage of their foods are processed, packaged, artificial, or restaurant made
  4. They eat once or twice per day with the majority of their calories being consumed toward the end of the day
  5. They have very little day to day physical activity or at best participate in a poorly designed exercise program
  6. They drink very little water which is commonly replaced with diet soda
  7. They usually average 4-6 hours per night of restless sleep
  8. They consume 4 or more Alcoholic drinks per week

As you can see there is not one particular thing which can be attributed to less body fat and a healthier lifestyle.  But if you take the time to look at the big picture hopefully you too will realize that each and every thing you do really does matter.  I’ve always felt that success leaves clues behind.  Go back again and re-read both the lists paying specific attention to the differences between them and you too will find the clues.
